Getting online in Japan

Japan's coverage is excellent almost everywhere: in the subway, on the shinkansen, even on many mountain trails. This eSIM can connect through NTT Docomo, KDDI (au) and Rakuten. Docomo generally has the widest reach in rural areas, so it's a good fallback if you're heading somewhere remote like the Kumano Kodo or the Japanese Alps.

You'll lean on data heavily. Google Maps is the best way to work out the train system, including platform numbers and which car to board. Google Translate's camera mode handles menus and signs, and taxi apps like GO save a lot of hand-waving. Free public Wi-Fi exists but is fiddly, often asking you to register on every network.

Add a Suica or PASMO card to Apple Wallet (or Google Wallet on supported Android phones) and you can tap through ticket gates and pay at convenience stores. A two-week trip with daily navigation and translation usually uses 10–20 GB.
