Getting online in China
China has excellent coverage, and this eSIM connects through China Mobile and China Unicom across the cities, the high-speed rail network and most tourist areas. What travellers usually want to know is whether their apps will work. Travel eSIMs like this one roam onto local networks, so services blocked on local Chinese SIMs, like Google, WhatsApp and Instagram, usually still work. This is one of the main reasons visitors use a travel eSIM in China rather than a local SIM.
You'll still want some Chinese apps. Alipay and WeChat Pay now accept foreign cards and are used almost everywhere, including at small shops and for taxis. Amap or Apple Maps give more accurate directions in China than Google Maps does. DiDi is the main taxi app.
Set up Alipay and WeChat before you fly, while you can easily receive verification codes on your home number. It's much harder to sort out once you're there.
